Q : Who are you?
I am Maddy Platt
Q : What do you currently do?
I am 12 years old and I am still a student.
Q : How old were you when you started to be an Enterprising Teenager?
I started very recently in fact. This past summer I became involved with slime and I decided to make a business out of it.
Q : What were you doing as an Enterprising Teenager?
So, I am a slime producer and seller! I did some research on YouTube on how to make my own slime. It took me several attempts to reach the perfect mix. I now use a mix of school glue, baking soda and contact lens solution. I then add food colouring and glitter to obtain different colours and aspects.
Initially I was just going to do this for me, but as I started to bring some of it in school, my friends noticed that my slime was different and really cool. They asked me if I could make some for them.
So I started to make some more. But then I ran out of the Tupperware to package the slime I was giving to my friends. I asked my mum if she could buy some more for me as I had used my pocket money to buy the ingredients for the slime. She pointed out that the slime should be sold at a price that would cover my production cost.
So many friends in school wanted to buy my slime that I found it hard to remember who wanted what and I had to take written orders down. The list of clients grew from ten to twenty, to thirty, to forty and then beyond that and that’s how I started my business.
Q : Who helped you the most when you were a teenager, and what did they do for you?
My mum helped me a lot. Together we did an analysis of the costs to come up with a sales price for my slime. She also helped me to make my logo, develop my website and the stickers for the packaging. My dad is helping me find all of my supplies online. My parents also provided some money to buy the ingredients to create the full first round of production (10 units).
Q : What is the biggest regret you have from when you were a teenager?
No regret so far, although the whole thing requires some effort. I have to hand-craft each slime to spec, mixing and kneading and colouring. I sometimes sit for about one hour or more until I have fulfilled the order of the day.
Q : What advice would you give to a teenager who wants to start a small business activity?
Don’t rush it and just be yourself and have fun!
