Q : Who are you?
I am Lucien Esseiva
Q : What do you currently do?
I am the founder of the company Esseiva Jewels SA and the jewellery brand Esseiva. We produce various collections of jewellery pieces, made of silver and steel. We also create beautiful made-to-measure sets with gold and diamonds. Our creations are available in Switzerland in various retail shops like Manor. We are now starting to develop internationally
Q : How old were you when you started to be an Enterprising Teenager?
I started to create and produce jewellery pieces when I was 26. This was a hobby first. Then when I was 29, I decided to switch from a hobby and to create my own company.
Q : What were you doing as an Enterprising Teenager?
I was still a student when I started to create and sell my jewellery pieces. When I completed my studies, I had to find a regular job to be able to live, and i was working on my own company on the side of my regular job.
Q : Who helped you the most when you were a teenager, and what did they do for you?
The most important thing is to find the right people to support you and your idea. You need these more experienced persons around you to share advice and if possible avoid mistakes or traps that can destroy your start-up.
In my case, two persons were particularly helpful, and they have also invested their own money in my company. They are still helping me now.
One person was willing to lend me money very early in the adventure and gave me some advice on how to structure the shareholding of my company when I created it. This helped me to grow faster. Another person shared his huge experience of the jewellery industry, as well as luxury watch making. He gave me really meaningful advice and precious support. He is still very much engaged at an operational level
Q : What advice would you give to a teenager who wants to start a small business activity?
What you are doing should not be just a simple idea that you decide to start in a heartbeat. It needs to be a real passion. If you have not got this passion from the start, then most likely after a certain time, or when the difficulties arise, you will abandon your project.
You really need to have this passion inside you. This is the main engine of success and it will give you the fuel to persevere.
Q : What is the biggest regret you have from when you were a teenager?
Create such a business on my own, and without much money, required a lot of work, a lot of time. I had to make sacrifices. I have lost some of my friends and I did not have much of a social life for a while. Instead of going out with friends, meeting people and making new friends, I started to going out less and I lost touch with some friends. That is the reason why you need to have this passion, otherwise rapidly you will not be prepared to make those sacrifices and you will abandon your project
