Entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg are the idols of many teenagers. They are seen as cool, everybody loves their company products and praises their success. The fact that they dropped out of college to create their own start-up also adds to their prestige.
But can everyone turn into a successful entrepreneur like of Mark or Steve?
Hard to tell, as some many factors will come into play. At Biz4Teens, we take a different view. We work with teenagers to help them become enterprising. We believe that everyone can be enterprising. We also think that being enterprising is the first step to become entrepreneur.
We like this interview of Vitaly Golomb, published on Huffingtonpost.com recently. Vitaly is a venture capitalist and serial entrepreneur who has been involved with startups since his teenage years. He is the author of Accelerated Startup.
In his book, Vitaly tells about what can make the life of young entrepreneurs easier.
He provides answers to the sort of questions every young entrepreneur is asking:
1) Where do great business ideas come from?
2) Why should I spend years of my life on it?
3) How do I go from an idea to building a billion dollar unicorn?
In his interview, he stated that “Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, or Mark Zuckerberg happen once or twice in a generation. They are not the right kind of role model. For most people, that is not how it is going to work.”
We agree with this viewpoint: not everybody will enjoy the same ride as Steve Jobs or Mark Zuckerberg. But it does not mean that teenagers should not try. To the contrary!
We are developing a programme to help teenagers become enterprising. It starts with simple business ideas and offers guidance to teenagers to execute such idea and learn from it.
We also think that teenagers need role models of successful professionals who have been enterprising in their teenage or student life. Such role models provide inspiration and guidance to aspiring enterprising teenagers. Their story, contrary to Steve’s or Mark’s, shows that not everything always goes right. That there are often some soft patches before reaching success. But they also show that every body can do it. This is the most important learning from being enterprising.
